Asplenium

Asplenium photo

If you love ferns, this one is for you. Asplenium is one of around 700 fern species that belongs to the Aspleniaceae family. Asplenium has its origin in African and Australasian subcontinents. These lovely ferns come in different varieties of wonderful shades and tinges of green. Going back to some history of medicine, these ferns were believed to have healing properties that can treat spleen ailments. Asplenium species usually have a "rosette" shaped leaf structure which look great for a garden or even indoors. Some of the amazing fern species under Asplenium are Asplenium nidus, Asplenium australasicum and Asplenium vivparum.

Asplenium nidus is also called "Birds' Nest Fern" because the leaves of these ferns form a beautiful nest-like structure. The leaves have a wavy structure that looks like a "rosette". These bright green colored ferns make an excellent landscape for your garden. Asplenium vivparum (also called Mother Fern) is another wonderful tropical fern that has its origin in Mauritius in Asia. These tender ferns are best suited indoors. They have small baby plants growing on the leaves which look great and justify the name "Mother Fern".
